Humanistic Practices in Supporting People with Developmental Disabilities - Part 1 of 2 (1/21)

This is a two-part series. If you'd like to attend for both days, registration is required for both 1/21 and 1/28.

This training will review alternative psychological theories of humanism and positive psychology to better understand the vulnerabilities of a person with Developmental Disabilities (DD). The discussion will encourage participants to rethink traditional behavioral approaches to behavioral health concerns and emphasize a shift to improving wellness in people with DD.

Learning Objectives:

1. Identify the historical treatment of people with DD

2. Identify humanistic approaches for supporting people with DD

3. Identify positive psychology approaches for supporting people with DD

4. Use a biopsychosocial framework to understanding people with DD

Speaker Bio: 

Rose Hazlitt is the Clinical Director of NY START/CSIDD Region 1 (Western NY) and Psychology Consultant for Regions 2 (Central NY), 3 (Capitol District), and 4 (Bronx, Manhattan, and Queens). Dr. Hazlitt received her Psy.D. from Alfred University and has worked with people with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD) and behavioral health needs for 15 years. Dr. Hazlitt is a New York State Licensed Psychologist that specializes in support of individuals with IDD and training for teams supporting people with IDD. Dr. Hazlitt is also certified in the START Model and National START Leadership Award recipient. START is a researched informed program emphasizing biopsychosocial assessment, positive approaches, trauma informed care, and strength-based solution-focused intervention.
