1. Understand the basic principles of public health advocacy. 2. Define lobbying and understand who may lobby on behalf of public health causes. 3. Understand the New York State budgetary and legislative processes and calendar. 4. Name one way to participate in advocacy activities.
Speaker Bio: Gus Birkhead is on the board of the New York State Public Health Association and chairs its Policy and Advocacy Committee. He us also Professor Emeritus in the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics at the School of Public Health, University at Albany. He worked at the New York State Department of Health for 27 years and retired in 2015 as the Deputy Commissioner for all public health programs. He holds a MD and MPH degrees. He has been on the faculty at the University at Albany School of Public Health since 1988 and has participated in teaching courses in epidemiology, infectious disease, HIV/AIDS, computer analysis and others. He has been the academic advisor for many graduate students and has served on many masters thesis and doctoral dissertation committees. He is the co-author of two public health textbooks and 9 book chapters on public health.
